Construction of a Railway From Manila to Bicol to Start in the 4th Quarter of the Year

In the fourth quarter of this year, a link to Metro Manila from Bicol and vice versa is in the works as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) plans to give the construction privileges for the building of the long-haul railway line.

The railway will be 639 kilometers long. Timothy John Bata, the undersecretary of the DOTr, said that the project will be funded by the Chinese Government. It is expected that the Chinese Government will be giving a large amount to fund the said project.

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) South Long-Haul Project will cost at an estimated amount of 175 Billion Philippine Peso. It will be one of the largest funded projects of the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program.

The bidding terms of reference are in the process of formulation by the China Railway Design Corporation. The China Railway Design Corporation is the project’s management consultant.

The PNR Bicol Project is approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) through the official development assistance (ODA) from the government of China. The DOTr earlier announced that the PNR Bicol Project will be partially operational before President Duterte’s end of term on the year 2022.

Upon the completion of the railway project, it will connect Metro Manila to Region 4-A and Region 5. This will lessen the travel time from Manila to Legazpi City from 13 hours to only 6 hours or less.

The Philippine government is also planning to have a Mindanao Railway Project which will be significantly funded by the Chinese government. It will connect Davao to Iligan, Cagayan De Oro, General Santos City, and Zamboanga. The first phase of the project will cost 35 billion Philippine Pesos. It will be 100 kilometers long which will run through Tagum Davao and Digos.
