Gas Explosion from Suspected Failed Suicide Attempt in Banquiao District Apartment Wakes Sleeping Residents Early Morning

Wreckage fills the road in front of an apartment in No. 430 Lane of Xinhai road, Banquiao District after a gas explosion from the 5th floor of the apartment occurred at 2:20 am.
Xinbei Fire Bureau dispatched numerous firefighters and ten firefighting appliances. Six ambulances were also there to help out.

There were four men and one woman that were sent to the hospital to their treat burns and glass cuts. All of them were conscious when they were taken out of the building. They did not suffer any critical injuries. Three of the people that were rescued were sent to Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and the other two were sent to be treated in a neighboring hospital.
The walls of the apartment were destroyed by the explosion and there were pieces of broken glass scattered all over the scene.

According to preliminary findings, the gas explosion was caused by a suicide attempt by a resident of the apartment living on the 5th floor. The resident’s name is Lee. She is 39 years old. It was suspected that Lee might have released the gas first and ignited it. During this attempt, her husband, brother-in-law, and mother-in-law were also in the apartment.
The real cause of the gas explosion is still under investigation.
