YDUST Apologizes and Offers Financial Assistance to Filipino Students

On March 7, 2019, Yu Da University of Science and Technology or YDUST issued an apology to its Filipino students for the incident regarding the students’ experience in working in an abusive environment where these students were left with no option but to do manual labor to pay for their living expenses.

The school offered financial assistance. The school will be providing the Filipino students involved in the maltreatment with partial to a full scholarship, free room and board.

The school released on Wednesday that the incident with that involved the well-being of their Filipino students was the school’s full responsibility.

The school even stated that it will give back to the Filipino students an amount equal to NT $2,000. The amount is the total amount the students were giving monthly to their recruitment agency.

To assist them with their living expenses in Taiwan, the Filipino students will also get back the tuition fees and miscellaneous fees they paid YDUST from the previous semester. The tuition fees and miscellaneous fees of the previous semester is NT $53,000.

The school will also provide partial to a full scholarship to the Filipino students based on their grades and attendance records. They will also be given coupons for free meals in the cafeteria of the school.
The school even added that the dormitory fees of Filipino students living on the campus will be waived.

The YDUST will also keep track of the details regarding their students who are working part-time. They will also conduct on-site inspections.

The Ministry of Education in Taiwan believes that YDUST was not recruiting students for illegal manpower agencies.

YDUST is still the one to blame for failing to give proper guidance to its students from foreign countries.

As a consequence of the negligence of the school, they are now forbidden to accept foreign students.
At the moment, there are 347 foreign students enrolled in the school. 52 of them are Filipinos who are involved in the issue of working extended hours illegally.
