FDA | "Synthetic Acetic Acid" present in 5 brands of Vinegar's sold in the Philippines

The Food and Drugs Administration in the Philippines had found out that five brands of vinegar sold in the Philippines contain synthetic acetic acid. The FDA had also studied the batch or lot number details and expiration date included in the packaging of the sample products examined.

The following brands were tested as positive for synthetic acetic acid by the FDA

a. Surebuy Cane Vinegar
b. Tentay Pinoy Style Vinegar
c. Tentay Premium Vinegar
d. Tentay Vinegar “Sukang Tunay Asim”
e. Chef’s Flavor Vinegar

In the recent FDA advisory number 2019144, the five brands are no longer allowed to be sold in the Philippine market. The FDA Undersecretary, Rolando Enrique Domingo, stated however that there were no known possible health threats of the five vinegar brands but he said that any vinegar products that contain synthetic acetic acid have substandard quality.

Substandard quality means that the said vinegar brands did not undergo the right fermentation process and that the vinegar products were rushed into production. Substandard quality vinegar is not allowed to be sold in the Philippine market.

The advisory number 2019144 from the FDA is required to be implemented immediately in all regulated establishments involved in the sale of vinegar products.

The FDA will be conducting further examinations and observations in different vinegar manufacturing facilities in the country to stop the use of synthetic acetic acid in the manufacturing of vinegar products.

Producers, Manufacturers, and sellers of these five brands and other brands which the FDA will find out to be using substandard quality ingredients in the creation of their vinegar products will be given penalties.
