Bill for SSS Coverage for OFWs to be Signed by President Rodrigo Duterte
Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are likely to get the benefit of getting SSS coverage after President Rodrigo Duterte signs the SSS Senate Bill 1753.
According to sponsor and author Richard Gordon, the SSS coverage aims to cover more OFWs aged below 60 years old, both working in land and sea. Thus, there will be up to 2.5 million OFWs who can get SSS benefits.
Emmanuel Dooc, President and CEO of SSS claims that due to more and more OFWs are paying their premiums, they can generate up to P16 billion within a year. With this, Gordon explained that SSS can possibly extend its fund life using this collection. Aside from that, they might be able to provide insurance for SSS members who are unemployed or those who are involuntarily displaced.
The SSS Senate Bill 1753 aims to increase the contribution of SSS members by 1% this year, 2019 and will continuously increase up to 15% by 2025. Moreover, the SSS Commission will have the power to create a stable monthly member-contribution as well as salary credit.
This would create an increase in contributions. This will also adjust the member’s salary credit, both minimum and maximum. Currently, the contribution of employees only amounts to P16, 000 which limits the benefits of its members.
By increasing the member-contribution, SSS states that there will be more opportunities to earn bigger via Reserve Funds. Gordon also mentioned that the SSS should be given a chance to help the people (Filipinos) and that the government should put more trust towards their people.
The Law on Social Security which was passed 21 years ago will be revoked by this SSS Senate Bill 1753.
