New Taipei | Free Chinese Lessons to help Immigrants Cope Up with Language Barriers

Based on the statement of a New Taipei labor affairs department, New Taipei will be giving free Chinese Language programs for immigrants to help them communicate better and adapt to the society faster. The program will be held again this 2019 starting at the start of July.




According to Huang Yu-wen, an official in a department in the Foreign Worker’s Service Division, Chinese classes will start on July 7, 2019. It will be divided into four sections which will cater to Indonesians, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Thai workers.

Huang Yu-wen said that the classes are sectioned based on the nationality of the immigrant because the instructors for the classes are bilingual and the classes will involve phonetic symbols, communication and dialogue, reading, and learning and singing.

Huang also explained that each group will start to undergo a basic beginners program every Sunday for a time period of Seven weeks starting from July 7 to August 18. After the seven-week basic beginner's program, they will then undergo an advanced program which composes of six classes. It will start in August and end in September.




Huang also said that the Chinese classes will help foreign workers financially because it is free of charge. It will also help them lessen language barriers and help the workers understand and appreciate the local Taiwanese customs and living traditions.

According to Huang, the participants in the program are limited to foreign migrant workers in New Taipei.

As per record of the Ministry of Labor, New Taipei had 98,156 foreign migrant workers as of April this year. 42,165 were Indonesians. 34,471 were Vietnamese. 14,040 were Filipinos. 7,479 were Thai. One is from Malaysia.
