Starting July 1st NT$ 3,000 will be fined for Passengers riding a car with a drunk drivers



It was announced on June 25th, Tuesday by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) that passengers of vehicles, driven by people who fail an alcohol test administered by government authorities, will be given a fine of NT $600 to NT $3,000. The passengers will be fined jointly and severally with the drunk driver who fails the alcohol test.

The said rule will start to be implemented in Taiwan on the first day of July 2019.





The rule applies to passengers riding in the same car or in the same two-wheeled vehicle (example: scooters) with a drunk driver.

To face a fine, passengers should be eighteen years old or more.  An exemption to this rule is for passengers who are more than seventy years old, mentally incapacitated or passengers who are paying for the services of the car driver.

Bicycle drivers who are intoxicated with alcohol, as determined by the test conducted by government authorities, will be fined an amount ranging from NT $600 to NT $1,200.




Four-wheeled (or more) vehicle drivers who are under the influence of alcohol will be facing a fine of NT $30,000 to NT $120,000.

For two-wheeled vehicles like scooters, drunk drivers will be fined an amount equivalent to NT $90,000.

A refusal by a driver to take the alcohol test will be faced with a fine of NT $2,400.
