Watch | New Manila International Airport to rise In Bulacan

The Department of transportation had granted permission to San Miguel Corporation to construct a 735 billion Philippine Peso international airport in Bulacan. This is aimed to ease the inconveniences caused by traffic in Manila.

Arthur Tugade, the transportation secretary had said in a statement that he had already signed a notice to start the project.

Upon the signing of the notice by Tugade, San Migues Corporation (SMC) is given the go signal to begin the construction of the New Manila International Airport. This is the first project of the government in over a decade to resolve to long-time issues with the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The SMC president, Ramon Ang had called the project as the company’s most meaningful project. He stated that the airport which SMC and the government will be building will contribute in many industries and the Philippine economy.

Records had revealed that 45 million passengers had been served by NAIA. The amount is 14 million more than the designed capacity of the airport. Its location limits it for expansion capabilities.

Based on a statement released by SMC, the New Manila International Airport will be constructed on a 2,400-hectare lot in Bulakan, Bulacan. This is situated in about 50 km northwest of Manila.

It will have four runways, eight taxiways, and three passenger terminals. This will have a capacity of 100 million passengers.

The project is estimated to be finished in five years.

SMC is in the process of acquiring Japanese, Korean, and European partnerships in operating the airport. SMC also plans to partner with global engineering firms like Groupe ADP, Meinhardt Group, and Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc in designing the airport.

SMC forecasts a 900 billion annual boost in the Philippine economy and an increase of 30 million tourists a year. It also sees the project as a way to help with the flooding problems in some parts of Bulacan.

Tugade believes that the partnership with SMC will help the country compete with world-class airports.

The project will be funded through debt and equity.

Fish pond workers who will be affected by the project will be provided with help and training. SMC will also be rehabilitating rivers, construct flood barriers and spillways to resolve the flooding problems in Bulacan.

Upon completion of the expressways, the travel time to Bulacan from Manila will be 30 minutes. This is one hour and a half shorter than the 2 hour-trip to Clark Airport.

A rehabilitation effort for the NAIA is still in the process of negotiations. This project is still subject to the approval of the National Economic and Development Authority. Tugade believes that numerous airports will be beneficial for the public.
