Employer Group calling the government to Disqualify unfit Caregivers
A Group of Employers in Taiwan are Questioning the Sufficiency of the Laws Set for Foreign Workers. Taiwan’s employers of foreign caregivers requested the government of Taiwan on Saturday to create a criterion for qualified individuals for the job.
An associate of the Taiwan Foreign Worker and Employer Group named Chien Li-Jen had shared a statement during a press conference about a large number of calls of complaints they are receiving regarding the incompetence of some foreign caregivers that Taiwanese employers hired.
Chien also said that some of the common complaints that they are receiving concerning foreign caregivers are the lack of enthusiasm and commitment to their responsibilities upon finding out the conditions and the amount of needed attention of their patients.
Chien shared a situation that happened in New Taipei last May where a foreign caregiver had placed a patient in a wheelchair under the heat of the sun for 2 hours while playing with her mobile device. The incident almost took the life of the patient.
After the incident, the foreign caregiver had requested to be transferred to a new employer. The caregiver’s request was approved by the Ministry of Labor even though the previous conduct of the caregiver was enough proof for her incompetence for the job.
The caregiver was allowed to transfer to a new employer because she complained that her previous employer did not provide for her basic needs like enough food and water. She also filed a complaint that she was given excessive duties and responsibilities in her job.
The employer did not win the case against the foreign caregiver because of his failure to present pieces of evidence on his claim.
The group of Chien had proposed that the current law is providing over-protection to unqualified foreign caregivers. They suggest that the governing body in Taiwan should put limitations on the privilege of foreign workers to shift from one employer to another. They recommend that foreign workers should only be allowed to change employers thrice every 3 years.
The Ministry of Labor released a statement saying that they will take back the privilege of migrant workers of working in the country if they are found out of gravely violating Taiwan’s laws.
