The Central Weather Bureau or CWB had released a cold surge reminder in some parts of North Taiwan as the mercury level in the region may drop at 10 degrees Celsius. The snow in the mountainous areas of Taiwan had started to fall.

From the continental air mass’ effects, the CWB forecasts that the temperature felt in the region will reach the coldest as of record in the morning of Monday and Tuesday (January 13 to 14, 2020). It was estimated that during these times, the temperature can reach a range of 11 to 13 degrees in the northern and central part of Taiwan. It was predicted that Hsinchu’s and Miaoli’s mountainous areas can reach temperatures as low as 10 degrees. CWB had released an announcement of a cold surge in the Miaoli and Hsinchu area.

The recent cold air felt in many areas of Taiwan had transformed into a continental cold air mass. In the northern region of Taiwan and Yilan, highs are forecasted to reach 17 to 18 degrees Celsius and 23 to 24 degrees Celsius in the southern and central part of Taiwan. Eastern Taiwan is estimated to reach a temperature of 22 to 24 degrees.

The cold air mass and the movement of the clouds system from the southern part of China are expected to result in rain showers in the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan. However, the southern part of Taiwan is expected to experience cloudy skies.

With the moisture and cold climate, the CWB forecast that snowfall will be seen in the mountainous areas in Taiwan with more than 3,000 meters of height such as Hehuanshan and Yushan.

From Wednesday to Friday, it is expected that the cold air mass will weaken and the temperature in the day will start to increase.

On Friday, a northeast monsoon is expected to reach the country and will probably bring a similar strength with the continental cold air mass. It may also bring colder temperatures to the northern part of Taiwan before it weakens on Sunday, January 19, 2020.
