Taiwan has recorded zero cases and if this continues the outbreak could end in June

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced on Monday (April 27) that there were no traces of COVID-19 has been recorded. If this lasted for two weeks, CECC head and Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said that the outbreak could end in June.

The streak also marks the 15th day that Taiwan has not recorded any local case.

The center recommends the patients who seek for medical attention to inform their doctors of the people who they recently have in contact with and their travel history for good measure.

Chen said that 1,916 contacts has been tracked by the health government out of 31 sailors in the “Goodwill Fleet”. The infection has also slowed down as 585 are in home isolation while 1,331 have administered self-health management. 262 of these people have undergone testing for Wuhan Coronavirus, 254 of them were tested negative.

The center will continue on tracing the infected sailor’s movement after disembarking from their ships.

At the beginning of the outbreak, Taiwan accumulated 60,459 tests for the virus, 58,531 have been tested negative. Taiwan has 429 total of cases, out of those cases 343 were imported, 55 were from local transmission, and 31 came from “Goodwill Fleet”. Six has died from the disease, while 290 has been removed from hospital isolation.

In a meeting at the Legislative Yuan scheduled on Monday morning, Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Tseng Ming-chung (曾銘宗) asked Chen if the domestic epidemic could come to an end by June if there were no recorded new cases of coronaviruses for a streak of two weeks. Chen replied that the outcome was possible, but even if the epidemic slowed down, the global pandemic wouldn’t seem to end any soon.

Tseng questioned for the possibility of the virus in returning to Taiwan in autumn or winter even if the epidemic was brought under control. Chen responded that it would depend on the verification of World Health Organization’s declaration of the presence of antibodies that may not provide protection against a second infection of the virus.

Chen explained that if the studies found the antibodies is not providing an effect against the virus, it would have influence on the research and development of vaccine. If the vaccine was not sufficient to fight of the virus, then the epidemic would occur again on certain season of autumn and winter.

Those who developed symptoms of the virus are advised to call the disease prevention hotline at 1922.
