New e-bike law to imposed fine Up to NT$ 5,400


The electric bicycle is growing its popularity among the population of Taiwan. Aside from being a cheaper transportation alternative, it is also not subject to traffic regulations. As of the moment, the government of Taiwan is in the process of drafting the rules and regulations to control and monitor the use of such transportation vehicles.

According to an article from Yahoo, the following are some of the highlights of the draft for regulating the use of electric bicycles in Taiwan:

1. Riders whose weight exceeds the weight capacity for riding an electric bicycle will be fined NT$ 1,800.


2. Modified electric bicycle drivers will be fined an amount equal to NT$ 300 if he or she fails to wear a helmet while driving the vehicle.





3. Intensively modified electric bicycles will be imposed a fine of up to NT$5,400. This is the most serious e-bike-related violation. Since modified electric bikes can reach up to a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour, it had been involved in a lot of traffic-related accidents. This is the reason why the government of Taiwan gives this violation the highest fine for e-bike rider abuse.

4. Electric bicycle owners who are driving at a speed of more than 25 kilometers per hour will be given a fine of NT$ 900 to NT$ 1800.

5. People who are aged 18 and below are allowed to ride electric bicycles as long as they are accompanied by someone who is 18 years old or older.


6. If planning to drive an electric bicycle with a child below 18 years old as a passenger, there should be a child seat installed to the bike. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in a penalty of more than NT$ 300.
