The Central Weather Bureau estimates that the mountains in Hehuanshan and Yushan will be covered with approximately 3,000 meters of snow starting December 5 Thursday.

The statement of the Central Weather Bureau includes a description of the origin of the cool air. It was stated by them that the cold air was from the northern part of Taiwan and the moisture in the air from the Typhoon Kammuri (Tisoy). This is viewed as the highly probable cause of the predictions by CWB regarding the snowfall. Hehuanshan and Yushan are expected to experience thick snow build-up in as early as December 5th.

As of four in the morning of December 2nd, the lowest recorded temperature in Hehuanshan this winter season was 1.6 degrees Celsius. The water dripping from the mountains had turned into ice and the plants and trees in the area are already covered with ice.

There is a high probability of the early start of snow for the week, said the Directorate General of Highway’s Puli Public Works. They are already preparing their snow clearing machines and training their staff on effective and safe snow removal. The snow clearing machines are being stored in Hehuanshan and are ready for use when the snow starts to fall.

Travelers are advised by authorities to carry snow chains for their vehicle’s tires. They are also asked to learn how to change tires.

Snow season in the area is expected to be from January 1st until the last day of February.
The early arrival of the snow season will mean that traffic control methods will be implemented for the safety of the residents and travelers.
