Edgar Mary Sarmiento, the 1st District Representative of Samar, proposed for the reopening of COVID-19-free provinces.

He asked the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases to consider those places with no COVID-19 cases to be released from quarantine after April 30.

In these places, borders will still be closed but the community inside the province will slowly go back to normal operations.

Only 50 percent of the labor force will be allowed to return for duty. The remaining 10 percent will be added to the following week that the province continues to stay free from COVID-19 cases.

According to Sarmiento, his proposal was made due to his concern with the food chain, especially that the raw materials for canned sardines are from Mindanao. Also, he aims to bring back normal operations in the community of those with no COVID-19 cases.

The Philippines have already reported more than 6,500 COVID-19 cases, 437 deaths, and 654 recoveries as of Tuesday.
