Philippines to Leave the Judgement to Taiwan’s Authority Over Filipina Caregiver Ordidor Case

On Wednesday, Malacañang stated that it will honor Taiwan’s authority over Elanel Ego Ordidor, a Filipina caregiver whom the Philippine government had asked to be deported over her critical comments about the current president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte. The comments were made by the OFW through social media.

Harry Roque, the spokesperson of the president gave this statement after Taiwan rejected the request of the Philippines to deport Ordidor over her remarks on social media against the administration of Duterte.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan stated that the interests and rights of their migrant workers are under the protection of the laws and regulations of the country.

According to Harry Roque’s statement, the Philippines leave the decision to Taiwan as the Philippines enforces the laws of the country to foreigners who are inside Philippine territory. Also, he said that Taiwan is part of China.

The Philippines honors the ‘One China Policy. The policy states that Taiwan is one of the territories of China. The basis for this view is the 1975 Joint Communique entered into between the Philippine and Chinese governments.

Manila has issues with maritime claims with Beijing in the country’s West Philippine Sea. The area’s reefs and islands had been transformed by the Asian giant as a military outpost to assert ownership in the disputed area. It disregarded the arbitral decision in 2016 that invalidates its claim to the area which was based on a mythical line.

Additionally, there have been reports of China’s coercive actions against Filipino fishermen, navy, and coast guards in the past years. However, the Philippine president chose to shelve the PCA ruling for some economic perks from China to help fund the infrastructure projects of his administration.
